Episode 32 Stephen King

Owner of the Voice Care Centre in London’s West End, Stephen King drops into The Singing Teachers’ Talk Show to chat with Alexa about all things Harry Potter, pasta, and what on earth The Bio-Psycho-Social Model actually is.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We all understand cause and effect, but when we can’t find the cause, we have to go back to the drawing board. The Bio-Psycho-Social Model is a three-part Venn diagram that looks at the biological, psychological, and sociological aspects that can contribute to the cause-and-effect equation.
  • As a coach one of the most important thing you can do it listen, in this instance not to the voice, but to what they’re saying. Actively listen to your student and you may find out other causes that are affecting their voice and vocal performance.
  • The core of what a coach is, is just being with someone while they discover who they are through an activity. Your role is to care, listen really well and help them discover that.
  • One of the critiques of The Bio-Psycho-Social Model is that it is too passive. If you’re spending your whole time listening, you’re not actually guiding.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Voice pedagogy is a social science’

‘Just listening well could be the start to that’

‘No one should live without a voice’
